4. Silly Things

  1. Inability to natively produce combined boldface and italic. This capability is mentioned early in documentation for other markup translators. I am guessing that the docutils parser does not know how to nest — perhaps not a recursive-descent parser, or the lexer is not well-enough defined to do this. This can be worked around by doing some hoop-jumping with custom roles like this:

    .. role:: bi
        :class: bi

    And then define that class in _static/custom.css like this:

    span.bi {
        font-weight: bold;
        font-style: italic;
    }

    Then in conf.py:

    # Introduce custom.css.
    def setup(app):
        app.add_css_file('custom.css')
        print("Adding custom.css to output....")

  2. This same inability to nest also causes it to miss LINK references inside a boldface or italic block.

  3. This MIGHT also be true for LINK targets, and possibly other markup. Possibly ALL other markup.
